For many people in this world, it is sometimes very difficult to believe in a God of love.  But neither is it easy to get rid of Him.  Even a casual look at the starry heavens on a clear night can fill us with a sense of awe.   And we find ourselves thinking that someone must be behind all of this.  And sometimes in quiet moments, there is a feeling that we are not alone.  Someone else is there, a presence that nothing material can explain.

So for many they believe in God more or less.  The evidence is inconclusive.  But we all know that days come when it is not enough to believe in God, more or less.  We need something stronger than that, we need faith in God that will sustain and empower us.

God for many people is often vague.  But how else could it be?  Here we are, mere mortals living for a few short years on one small planet.  We cannot fully comprehend this earth, let alone the universe which is a part.  And how could we ever hope to fully comprehend the God who is behind it all?

What is it that shakes our faith in a God of love?  It is not some new atheistic argument.  Frankly, I doubt there is any such thing.  What shakes our faith in a God Love is the incarnation of evil.  It takes a body and puts on a face and walks in our midst.  We see it in the devastations of war.  We see it in the empty eyes and emaciated bodies of starving children.  We see it in the helpless and innocent victims of tragedies.  And we find ourselves wondering about a God of love.

No argument can ever answer that question.  The only thing that can answer an incarnation of evil is an incarnation of love.  And that is what God did that first Christmas.  He sent His son to live among us.  He answered the incarnation of evil with the incarnation of good.

Jesus is a personality that is easy to love.  All sorts of people have found Him hard to resist.  There is a charm about Him that haunts people who do not wish to be haunted.  Christianity, at its best, is a way of life that begins with surrender to this irresistible person Jesus.

The God of this universe is impossible to fully understand.  But God has done something about it.  He has entered our world and walked into our lives in the person of His son.  He fed the hungry.  He healed the sick.  He befriended the outcast.  He played with children.  He loved everybody, even His enemies.  And many have found themselves falling in love with Him, in spite of all of their efforts to resist Him.

Because of His love for us, God is seeking us.  God is reaching out to us constantly.  We are like lost sheep.  God is like a shepherd looking for that which He has lost.  That is a concept of God, unique to the New Testament.  And how desperately we will need it.

It would be a great day if this view of God cold take hold in your mind and mine – no longer a vague theory, but a life that can be seen; no longer fearful absolute, but a beautiful person that is easy to love; no longer a far-off mystery, but a pursuing friend that seeks us in a hundred different ways.  So do not resist but open up your heart to Him.  He truly loves you.
